Gold Coast’s Specialist Asbestos Roof Removal Team
If your house was built before the 1990s, it’s highly likely that asbestos-containing materials were used during construction. As one of the most common targets for asbestos, your roof may contain both friable and non-friable materials.
At Roofing M8, we provide specialist asbestos re-roofing services for homeowners on the Gold Coast. With more than two decades of experience, we can identify and dispose of asbestos in your roof and provide re-roofing work as required.
Asbestos – Is It in Your Roof?
Asbestos is a group of naturally occurring minerals that were commonly used in construction between the 1940s and 1980s. It was known for its durability, insulation properties and fire resistance, but it was later found to be incredibly damaging if inhaled.
Because asbestos fibres are thinner than a human hair, they are considered to be especially dangerous, particularly when they are damaged or disturbed. Friable asbestos is softer and looser – and therefore higher risk – while bonded or non-friable asbestos is usually mixed with concrete and only dangerous when disturbed.
According to the Queensland Government, you may have asbestos in your house if it was built:
- Before the mid-1980s (highly likely)
- Between the mid-1980s and 1990 (likely)
- After 1990 (unlikely but possible)
The most common areas to find asbestos in your roof include:
- Corrugated wall and roof sheeting
- Roof guttering
- Ridge capping
- Imitation brick cladding
- The lining of your eaves
- In the roof cavity as loose fill insulation (less likely)

Identifying Asbestos – Risks and Steps to Take
Asbestos can take many forms in your roof and it is practically impossible to identify from sight alone. Most of the time, suspected asbestos will need to be identified in a lab.
If you have been completing DIY tasks or examining your roof, you may have found materials that you believe to contain asbestos. To avoid disturbing the material, you should not touch it in any way. Instead, call our licensed roof asbestos removal team to determine your next steps. Similarly, if your house was built before the 1990s, you should assume your roof contains asbestos and have it checked.
It is vitally important not to attempt asbestos removal yourself. When inhaled, the fibres can lead to:
- Asbestosis – scarring of the lung that gets progressively worse
- Mesothelioma – a cancer of the lung lining and abdomen
- Lung cancer
- Non-cancerous lung and abdomen diseases
